Growing up, I always loved music and admired musicians, and still do. When I lecture, a friend who my first dorm played the harmonica. I was fascinated and envious. I always wanted to play an instrument, but we could never afford lessons, let alone the possibility of an instrument to buy. But if this guy told me that he bought for two U.S. dollars, my heart jumped. Even I could afford that paltry sum. So I walked straight to the local department store and bought my own. It was not until I returned to my room I realized I could not play a note. It drove my roommate crazy and so I had to resort to playing in the bathroom or stairwell. I would not use the word "play" at this time. It was making noise at a level very annoying at best. But every free minutes between classes and studying, I tackled "Mary Had a Little Lamb" and other classics.

About three months later, I could play four or five nursery rhymes. Hey, it's a start. This important achievement under my belt, I moved to music show. My family has always had music around a Broadway show Camelot and Oklahoma, so I naturally attracted towards what I knew. Later I would try the Beatles and the Stones. In my last year, I could play by ear. When I heard I could play. Playing the harmonica is very therapeutic and satisfying. Then a few years later, when I was in the house of a friend with a piano, they suggested that maybe my ear training could translate to the piano. I explained that I could not afford a piano and she told me to a cheap electric organ, which still uses the same keyboard to consider.

I found a used table-top organ in the paper for about twenty dollars and was excited. It was a small with only three octaves, but played well enough. Within a few weeks, I could manage my rhymes, all by ear. I was now in my late twenties and continued with the organ for several years. Finally, I traded in for a larger floor model and learned to play almost anything. There was only one problem: I could not nuts read or do not play chords. So I have a few pieces of sheet music for Broadway shows and gave it a try. By the time I was forty, I taught myself chords and how to read music. I bought a cheap keyboard, finally graduated from the organ. A few years later, I bought a good keyboard with all the great features that make me a lot instrumental sounds to play.

With my new toy, I decided to broaden my horizons and started to collect music from every genre from classic rock of the 50's to jazz and blues. I recently got a guitar for Christmas and am determined to teach my third instrument to play. I actually played in the church band for a few years and really enjoyed the experience. So why do I say this? Because it saved my life. No, I did not die of a rare disease where music dominated the cancer or something like that. Instead it allowed me to close out the rest of the crazy, stress-filled world and the melodies and harmonies that could soothe my troubled mind games. It could transport me back in time to my college days when the Jefferson Airplane "White Rabbit" the ether or "Tommy the rock opera excluded." I could escape the strict requirements social or economic issues and to relax.

I can not think of a better way to lose yourself or push away from the daily grind. It is more than therapeutic: it is regenerating and energizing. I figure that if a forty years old can teach themselves to play, then anyone can. I started with the harmonica. But discovered that it was one of the harder instruments to play because you can not see the holes and therefore have to play by ear. You can get a cheap keyboard and tap a number in a few minutes. There are dozens of classes on the internet and keyboards that self-study using light and technology.

The point is, it is one of the cheapest ways to enjoy yourself and can enriching and rewarding. You do not go to a concert pianist to become yourself. You can plug in some earphones so you do not annoy everyone around you and use almost no electricity. I guarantee you, whatever your age, you can learn to play and will be grateful if you even some simple songs to master. It's fun, entertaining, and will give you endless hours of fun. If you have never considered learning to play, make it a priority this year. No, I do not work for Baldwin, but I believe in the power of the music. It is an idea and a gift from me to you. And it could well save your life from boredom.
