One of the most common mistakes that can make a harmonica player while playing with other people playing too much in one song and as a professional harmonica teacher I always try to objective to keep my students thinking about ways they can improve. The following exercise will allow you the amount you play in question, and as long as you aim to something new to work.

This exercise provides the best results when one or another way of recording yourself playing with your favorite numbers.

Step 1) Choose a song that has singing, but no harmonica. Ideally there should be a place for you to put a solo.

Step 2) Record yourself playing harmonica on the song.

Step 3) Analyze your game. From the moment you begin to listen, focus solely on the amount of time during the song that you remain completely silent. If you have a stop watch you you use the quiet time periods exactly.

Step 4) Lenses criticism. If you discover that you play for more than 50% of the song you can have playing. There are exceptions that is why you should be honest with yourself. Sometimes the line between playing too much or too little can be very helpful. Be critical.

Now the reason I asked you for a song singing is to get his numbers because that is where most players simply play harp too much. With a quick piece of music that is entirely based on the harmonica taking the lead totally by (Whammer Jammer - J. Geils Band for example) it is difficult to detect if your playing on and you can generally get away with more anyway.

So if you think you guilty about playing here are some basic methods you can use to remedy the situation.

1) Record yourself again, but this time stand still through the whole song and just play solo.

2) If you think you really need more play than the solo try limiting yourself in the following fashion. After playing a lick you feel the urge to play another lick. Stop yourself from playing the lick. This requires discipline. You will then feel the urge to play again. Again, refrain from playing. At Third urge to play your heart desires licking and then repeat the process. So in short, from the moment you start playing your first lick you just act on any third drive. This is also useful for helping you feel during your solos so try playing your solo using the "three drive 'principle.

The main thing you need to understand here is this: --

Most songs are very good job in your absence. Just relax and add some sweetness to the song only if needed.

Until next time have fun and take care.
