When you play guitar, the technique that you catch on the strings or pick your guitar strings, without a plectrum called a fingerstyle. Fingerstyle blues is in use for quite a long time in jazz, blues, rock and even used for improvisation on blues backing tracks. There are a some celebrities from the world of the blues as Mark Knoprfler, Jeff Beck and Chat Atkins, who are doing very well. In a nutshell, this technique is all about how well you are able to use your bare fingers. You can use finger style blues on both acoustic blues and electric blues, but they must have nylon or steel strings. Using the fingerstyle blues gives players a clear edge. Most of the blues guitarists of the Delta blues style used extensive backing tracks enhanced by finger styles.
You may have heard the word more than fingerpicking fingerstyle and mind you - both the words sound similar but mean different things. Fingerpicking in the blues is more focused on specific picking patterns derived from certain agreements and always play in a style very similar to arpeggio. For example: The song Layla by Eric Clapton is fingerstyle, but the song never goin back again by Fleetwood Mac is fingerpicking.
Various Finger Blues Styles
There are different types of blues fingerstyle techniques you can learn as you go up the ladder and of course if you want blues backing tracks play. The most common way to use finger style blues backing tracks is by using the classical guitar style. In the classical guitar, you use your thumb play the 3 bass strings, and using the index and middle finger to play the melody strings.
There are three distinctive style of blues and fingerstyle guitar each have a different effect in blues backing tracks. They are:
1.Using the thumb: The thumb fingerstyle mostly requires down-strokes. It will provide you with a hard style, hard sound, and a great tone, but you will not easily play. This is considered a beginner-style and provides you with a feeling of the guitar and the strings and create the foundation for blues backing tracks.
2.Index thumb and index finger: With this technique you need for the simulation of playing with a plectrum, except with your fingers instead of the pick. The thumb will help with the down-strokes, while the index will be used for up-strokes.
The thumb, forefinger and middle finger: With this technique, you have a clear advantage over the other two techniques and can play blues backing tracks with ease and speed. The middle finger and index finger will be used for alternate picking.
