I was fortunate to grow up in a house where my father and mother both played instruments. My father was a master of the harmonica (mouth organ) - all keys, and my mother played accordion. They often played together and for family and friends.
My mother does not always play the accordion. Her mother made her take organ lessons, which her bored.
My uncle taught accordionist who was one of dissatisfaction with my mother playing the organ, he offered her one of his accordions to borrow. If the vibrant person she was, she was excited at the opportunity.
He had taught her the basics of how the bass works. The keyboard, of course, was like an organ keyboard, only indirectly so it was easy for her to learn.
My uncle gave my mother a few albums. I discovered the albums one days and fell in love with the music! The one album in particular was my favorite. The accordion music was playing with a jazz band of a kind. I often put it on the living room and danced to the music.
Long after I married and moved to OH (from CA) I told my husband about that album and how I wish I had, but I had no idea what it was called or who was the accordion. As a young girl, I gave just about the music and never paid attention to detail.
I called my mother and asked her about the album and whether she still had. She said since she moved to a another house, she had never seen. Also they did not know any details about the album. I was really desperate. I had a drive in me that just needed to get that album! The only what I remember was a large, colorful bird on the album cover. I remembered the melody of one of the pieces were played, but not the name.
After my fifth child was born, I decided to take formal lessons and really learn to play the accordion Galanti my mother had me. I located an accordion instructor, Ed Cifani, in the Cleveland area.
I told him about this album I heard as a child. He asked if I could sing the songs. I remembered the one for sure and began to hum to him. He said: "Oh, that's 'Malaguena'"! He easily Dug Out for Malaguena sheet music arranged by a man named Charles Mangnante that I, for the first time, heard that name and was discovered one of the best accordionists in the world!
I immediately turned to eBay and typed the keywords and Malaguena Mangnante in the search box and got hits for several albums. I hope each auction breathlessly opened, some 20 years later, I just saw the album I would like to recognize a child. I clicked on the next auction - And there was - the album with the Big colorful BIRD (peacock, I believe) on the front page.
I outbid the many bidders for that album. I took a chance, because I had no opportunity to actually hear one of the songs. I went just by the fact that they Malaguena and the large colorful bird. When it came to my house, I jumped all over. My four children at that time thought I was nuts. I tore open the package, ran to the turntable and gently put the needle on the album. Only the very whisper of the first sound and I was sure that this album was my mother I loved so much and much to do with my infatuation with the accordion had!
At that point, I danced around the living room, like me as a child, and my kids thought I really flipped out, I'm sure. She stood there and watched me as I flew around screaming YES! The album featured Latin music, Charles Mangnante on the accordion with a 32-piece jazz band accompanying him. What a combo!
Those of you who like the accordion, I am sure share my excitement.
