Has pro harmonica players play a diatonic or chromatic?
The major pro usually play a chromatic. But of course many blues players simply up switching between diatonic. Some guys use chromatic blues: Paul Butterfield was great in this regard. But one of the most amazing harmonica players I ever met I had a cat named Bill Dice. His thing was diatonic ... Now usually, as you know, play the harp is one quarter over the button ... A for E, for example. This gives all natural Blue Notes ... but Bill's thing was wilder than that: he could play almost any key on a harp, within reason. He would use a B, even a C harp in A, for example, fine sing the notes of slurring.
