First off, let me just put it there: the modern working environment for most of us sucks. It does. We spend at least 8 hours a day in cramped offices with bad air, and even worse vibes. If we are lucky we can get out to walk to a nearby store and pick one (usually unhealthy) lunch. The reality is many of us agree to do that, but we are bent on the same tired old take-out menus in the hope that something new and exciting will magically appear somewhere between lo mein and moo shu - fat chance!
So, we are all familiar with life as an office mole, but we are probably more familiar with all the pressure, stress and sometimes downright mean behavior that it entails. But we can not stop our work and even if we did, there would be no guarantee that the following wind in the office we would not be better, hence the expression "better the devil you know. "
So, what to do?
Well, we can not eliminate stress from the job permanently, but we can better the short term through a mini-break. Yes, you are entitled to one, in fact, different every day. So, when the pressure begins to accumulate, just excuse yourself for 5 or 10 minutes.
Take a Mini Break
If you can swing it, head outside into fresh air. Take a few deep breaths and look up at the sky. Focus on the clouds, the sun, snow, or rain, what happens with the weather. If there happens to be a different kind, in the neighborhood, a stream, a park, even a single tree or shrub, you can focus on that. Take some more deep breaths.
Not only watch but also try to listen, maybe you hear a bird singing, the clatter of rain or thunder. It point is to concentrate on what you want, take yourself to another at least for a few minutes. Take as many deep breaths as you need and try your mind of everything except you see and hear clearly.
If you can not make it out you can still a mini-break
Grab your iPod and head to the bathroom or break room, if you have an office. Bring 5 or 10 minutes listening to your favorite song or perhaps soothing nature sounds.
Take slow deep breaths while you listen.
Focus and try to imagine the scene in the song or the place of nature sounds were recorded. Engage your senses and try to see and smell what you're listening. Imagine yourself in that place or scene. And, do not forget to take a deep breath!
You will notice that your heart rate gradually slows down and your mind begins to let go of some of the fear you feel. You'll feel noticeably calmer and perhaps even renewed. In 5 or 10 minutes have passed, you find yourself calmer, better able to effectively cope with stressful at work place.
It may not seem much but 5 minutes to take a mini-break can a lot of distance between you and workplace stress.
