harmonica key question?
I want to play along with songs from the Band. I have a harmonica (key of C) and I am a total beginner. I know you must have the right key to play a song. I found the guitar chords to "It makes no difference" line, and at the top of the page "TUNING: EADGBE. Is this the info I need? If so, what key harmonica would give? What would the tuning guide say a song I could play along with my brand new C harp? (I love the Allman Brothers, if you know one of their songs that I could play along with a C harp, you can tell me what they are.) Thanks. I'm seriously a brand new beginner, if I do not sound crazy stuff to me.
An diatonic harmonica (10-holes) is usually played in cross harp (second position), so you would use a C harp in a song that is the key G. You can still play a C harp in the key of C (called "straight harp" or first position), but it is not the same bluesy sound and feel (unless you're really playing blues in first position, especially at the lower octave and an octave higher, like Jimmy Reed used to play). An diatonic harmonica is "missing" states, but they can be found by "bending" (smoothing) some nuts ... Not all notes can be "bent ".... make some notes can be bent, and some blow notes can be bent. It takes much practice to these 'missing' notes, but musically very rewarding when you finally to get there ... An ongoing learning process. Well of course there are other "position" as well, but that is "beginner" stuff. So look for the numbers the key of G (and C) for your C harp to play along with ... To view a list of songs, try doing an Internet search for "song for harmonica keys." David Barrett's Harmonica Masterclass website has a large list of blues songs and artists with the number keys and harp keys.
