Portable eBook Reader Review

If you're like most people, you do not need portable eBook reader. Although factors such as habit, the love of dead trees and the cost of portable eBook readers have kept them off, my experience with them makes me believe that they the wave of the future.

As a lover of books and electronics, I bought Sony's original portable eBook reader (the first e-ink technology used) and still has not bought a paper book. I hooked it not just because I can a tech freak, but as eBook readers have advantages that include:

1. Ability to a huge pile of books in a device smaller than a traditional book. No need to think about what books to take your vacation or go somewhere else. You can stuff your whole library in your suitcase if you want. Once you finish one, the following is only a few clicks away. Moreover, the books that you finish will no longer be stacked on the shelves are moved and maintained until you finally find the courage to get rid of them.
2. Being able to buy books online where you can check reviews etc and get your books with immediate gratification and zero shipping. Also, the digital price usually considerably cheaper.
3. You can read books in new ways. As a portable eBook reader does not like pages in a book, you can easily set without loss of your page, read and read hands-free or turning pages with one hand.
4. Change text size (you think about it before you know it!)
5. Many titles legally free download at sites like mobileread.com

Of course, there are also negatives. The obvious:

1. The cost of portable eBook reader. It seems that it will be at least a few years before we see really cheap Ones.
2. Having to deal with DRM if you want your book to give to a friend

Similar though my first portable eBook reader some design issues I did not like (especially the poor design of the page turning buttons, but this has been corrected in the new models), points above and the e-ink technology, which is clear, low power and does not lead to more eye strain than reading a paper book, still the electronic book over a paper book.

My next foray into portable eBook reader, the Kindle 2. What impressed me was:

1. Design (just check it out!)
2. Built in dictionary (something I will definitely use)
3. The text read to you (if I want a book in a dark car, so enjoy)
4. Possibility to subscribe to various magazines, newspapers and blogs cheap.
5. The selection of books (more than 90% of all English titles are now sold)

Of course thousands of years by means paper not go at night disappear, but the benefits of portable eBook readers will eventually push the paper into a fetish niche novelty. Book burning will take on a whole new meaning.
