In his youth he played on street corners for dimes and cents! He was born on September 16, 1925 on a plantation in Itta Bena, Mississippi, near Indianola. He spent his childhood play for dimes on the street. Today BB King (Riley B. King) averages 250 'packed to the rafters concerts "around the world each year.
In 1947 he hitchhiked to Memphis, Tennessee to his musical career and it's first love. His first big break came in 1948 when he performed on Sonny Boy Williamson's radio broadcast. As the well years, King has developed one of the world's most recognizable guitar styles.
He borrowed from Blind Lemon Jefferson, T-Bone Walker and others, which are different and complex voice-like string and mixtures are left-handed vibrato, both of which have become vital parts of the blues guitarist's vocabulary. His economy, his every-note-counts phrasing, has been a model for thousands of players from Eric Clapton and George Harrison to Jeff Beck.
In the mid 1950s, two men got into a fight at a performance of the King. The men knocked over a kerosene stove and set fire to the location. King ran outside to safety and when he realized his beloved acoustic guitar left. He hurried back to catch up and nearly lost his life. He discovered later that the fight was over a woman.
He named his guitar Lucille him out to remember to never fight like a crazy thing for a woman. Since then, each of King's guitar is named Lucille. Does your guitar have a name?
