In the world of role-playing games have been tied to the argument of which system is better. A better than B, B is better than C and C is better than Y? It all comes down what you want. Please you realistic gaming that you would roll dice to see if you can even climb on the back of a horse, while arrows rain down on you from above? Prefer you kick the door down and kill the dragon type games? Read on and I will comment on both RPG systems.
GURPS - Generic Universal Role Playing System
GURPS is a great game for role-players. This system allows you to virtually every character you can imagine. Would you Ectoplasmic Dancing Toaster play from the first Ghostbusters movie? Well, if you have you could lead to GURPS. GURPS does exactly what it says. You can change your game around and anywhen and be able to create a character to play.
This can Make a real problem with new gamers do. Information overload. The main issue most new players I have is to create a character. Without any guidance from an experienced player of the many opportunities and rules for creating characters can really drive a new player to do that. GURPS is very scalable though, can you play a game with a some very basic rules, or you can play a game that really is complex.
If you create character through the complexities you are in for a real treat. This system was designed to be virtually the only system you would really need any kind of game you can play or not interested if you think there is a pretty good chance GURPS can do.
GURPS is my favorite gaming system because of the capabilities of the system. It is just a sandbox to the brim with everything you need at the Sand Castle you can make.
D & D - Dungeons and Dragons
D & D, this is the grand-daddy of all role-playing games. Without this game there is a reasonable chance that many of the games any, role play and video, very different level than what they are today. These play a lot due to D & D. As first role-playing game with the rules the stage for what is become a global industry and hobby for millions of people.
Although D & D is a bit long in the tooth, the publisher recently released D & D 4th Edition. I think this system is moved far from its roots in the original D & D and Advanced D & D. The new system plays more like a video game. Which, I'll be honest, can bring in a lot of new players to the hobby. But it is not the D & D of old that I grew up.
D & D 4 is fairly straightforward, you create a character based on character classes and races and the use of the system based on the level of your character advances and more powerful. In D & D 3.5 there appeared to be a specific set of levels where the game was at its best. In D & D 4 I think they solved this problem where the game can be enjoyed at all levels.
D & D 4 is more related to the kick in the door and kill and take what has been underestimated. Rinse and repeat. But I also think that it has opened up the options for the role-playing then D & 2nd ed D or 3.5 by removing certain skills, the actual role-play in social environment instead of rolling the dice to see if they managed to somebody talking. This is just one example.
So, can I pick one system to another? Sure, but that's because I already play for more than 20 years, and yes I've cut my role-playing teeth on D & D. But, as I have become more interested in many more things, GURPS suits my playing style better interests and that D & D. Not to say that a fast, the trap door game is not fun at times. It's just not something I want to play all the time.
