The Chromonica is truly a classic model of chromatic harmonica - made by the Hohner Company of Germany, has for several years, and looking at pictures of chromatic harmonica players in the past decades past, you see the Chromonica in the hands of some famous players such as Stevie Wonder and Toots Thielemans. Usually it's in this picture Hohner Super Chromonica play, the 12-hole version of the chromonica, model # 270.
Stevie Wonder is famous for his pop / funk style of playing the chromatic, a choppy, slurring style he has created and that many players want to emulate.
Toots Thielemans style on the other side is much smoother, legato a jazz style that fits beautifully in the traditional jazz accompaniment.
The Chromonica harmonica has a wooden comb, which means that the middle part of the instrument, the basic body of the instrument, is made of wood. Often these days, the comb of the harmonica made of plastic.
There are different schools of thought on whether it is preferable to a wooden comb or have a plastic comb - they definitely have their pluses and minuses. Wood, as you can imagine, reacts to moisture and therefore shrinks and swells a little. Plastic combs on the other hand, this problem, but may not have the wood has beautiful tone.
However, the Chromonica is in production for decades, and still is a great tool. It is Hohner's top of the line ", but it is a good reliable tool to make a" classic "sound can get, and if cared for, Chromonica harmonica, the last and one of your favorite tools.
The Chromonica comes in several sizes: the 12 holes and 16 hole models. The 16 holes chromonica has an extra octave lower on the left side of the harmonica, which can be fun, but on the other hand, the 12-hole harmonica in your hands tend to fit much better, is lighter, and is easier to hold a microphone cupped like that the way you play.
Chromatic harmonicas are designed to play every complete scale in any key - major, minor, pentatonic, blues, etc. - all on one instrument. Yet they can be purchased in different keys - the most common by far is the key C.
A theoretical chromatic harmonica can play in any key, because as part of the mechanism possible for all 12 notes of the "Western" (standard play do-re-mi) wide so by using the scroll button on the side of the chromonica you can build your various scales. But as you can imagine, starting in different keys various places on the scale of Western music, such as G lower than usual from the C-scale harmonica.
The c scale harmonica is tuned midrange, and is easy to understand music theory-wise, so if you use the chromatic harmonica (a Chromonica in this case) to construct scales for whatever song you play, it is easy to start with the basic "clean slate" (no sharps or flats) in the key of C harmonica, and build on from there.
A example would be if you played a key of C Chromonica in the key of D, then you push the button you would use the C sharp and F sharp in the size of the key of D to your C chromonica play in the key of D.
Hohner's summary Chromonica harmonica chromatic harmonica is a classic that a lot of history behind it, has a beautiful tone, and is reliable. It is a midrange model Hohner harmonica and is a great place to start playing the chromatic harmonica.
