Guitar effects pedals, which are also called Stomp boxes, used by the musician to change the sound of their guitar. Stomp boxes get their name because the "pitch" action necessary to effect the work. When the pedals are off, you can play with the guitars clean (unaffected signal) noise from your amp. When you step on it turn it on, the signal that goes to the pedals are changed to create the desired effect.
You can also more than an effects pedal to your guitar. Simply use patch cables (short cables) to close to each other using an input and outputs. You can individually determine which effects you want on and off at any time simply by turning (pounding) them on or off. When a pedal is turned off, the signal will bypass it and go through all that is enabled.
For the best possible sound quality should be your gain and tone based effects at the beginning of your line of pedals. Gain and tone based effects include distortion, volume, wah and EQ. Then you put the pedal to the change of pitch or the color of your sound. When at the end of the chain, the pedals that can affect your timing such as delay, reverb and flanger.
If you have a lot of effects pedals accumulate, you can find them all organized and protected by a pedal. Pedal boards are basically a flat board that your pedals can be placed on all connected together. You can even them with covers, transformers and wind power to make a deal and move into action occur.
One thing to be aware of the connection, is that too many pedals and humming along to a lot of unwanted noise. To overcome this problem a Noise Gate pedal can be used.
With so many different kinds of pedals on the market today, could not possibly name them all. So I do the next best thing and will some of the more popular Ones.
Distortion:
Disturbance is used in many popular music genres especially metal, rock and hard rock. The distortion pedals job is to clip the signal is distorted.
Chorus:
Chorus pedals give you a thick and luxuriant sound by duplicating your original sound, adding any delay to the mixing and then back to your original signal. This ends the make your guitar sound like a steel guitar or a "chorus of guitars" if you want.
Flanger:
Like the Chorus pedal, the Flanger duplicates the signal, adds a short delay and then mixes it back with your original signal. The difference here is that postponing the Flanger includes several repeat that and get more with less a constant speed. This provides a thicker sound over the chorus pedal.
Wah-wha:
The wah-wha pedal kind of looks like your car and your throttle Rock This pedal back and forth to allow lower and higher frequencies do pass. This then provides the "wah-wah" sound. Jimi Hendrix in the late 60s and funk music in the 70 years was this effect famous.
Reverb:
The Reverb effect reproduces the natural acoustic space by producing an echo of your sounds like it is played in a large concert hall.
Talking Box:
Last but not least is the Talk Box. The Talk Box pedal has a small speaker that plays a loud signal airtight small plastic tube. This tube is taped to the side of the microphone where he puts just enough to send the sound into the mouth of the guitarist. The guitarist will then form their mouth to change the sound, which is then picked up by the microphone. Many artists have used the Talk Box over the years, but one of the most famous was Peter Frampton who made of him in his song "Do You Feel Like We Do" from his Frampton Comes Alive record.
I hope you have enjoyed my statements by some of the guitar effects pedals out there. This is only a small fraction of the effects available to you. Some advice would be that you do a little research on some of your favorite guitarists and what effects they discover that they use "their sound" the most. For example if you hard rock or heavy metal, it would be a good idea to start with a distortion pedal. Rock On!
