Giving medication to reptiles can be "smooth". With their varied physiological and anatomical make-up, choosing 'routes of administration "fairly complicated. view to deal with scales, teeth and a cranky attitude makes reptile medication a daunting task for a newbie.

There are specific techniques that can be used in treating a sick reptile with drugs. Each form of reptile medication has advantages and disadvantages should be carefully considered if not for the reptile more pain give.

Administration of fluids or a reptile medication through the mouth is tricky because you have to do with the sharp teeth, possibly poison, and the highly sensitive glottis. All reptile (a man!) Failure to appreciate some foreign object shoved her throat and can be very cooperative. They tend to acquire a more cranky mood when sick too. Usually a catheter or tube attached to a syringe prepared with slurry or liquid medication is inserted into the throat to the stomach to prevent flooding in the glottis and the liquid to a back-up in the mouth causes.

If oral drug delivery is difficult and risky, an alternative would be reptile medication by injection. There are several types of injection: intraocoelomic / intraperitoneal (IC / IP), subcutaneous (SQ) and intramuscular (IM). These cavities, loose skin and muscle, respectively. When liquids are injected directly into the body is inserted, they are quickly absorbed and can be administered in more than once when giving fluids orally or by SC. The catch is you must be extremely careful, because when done incorrectly, can damage an organ.

The injection sites which should be carefully chosen, even for SQ and IM injections to avoid needlessly hurting the reptile. For SQ in particular, to inject just under the skin would often require repeated injection in different parts of the body of the reptile in the management of the adequate dosage. After suffering a shot once, the reptile will probably try to have more and therefore too soon to fend off.

When injections of reptile medication treatment, one should at least have experience in dealing with needles to prevent you the taste of his own medicine - literally!

Reptile keepers should be careful in the choice of the most (or only) appropriate type of reptile medication. For example, IM is not suitable for chameleons "very thin, poorly muscled legs. It is less annoying for the medicine to inject into the body of a poisonous snake in his mouth than the company. As for a 2000-pound crocodile with a sensitive disposition, it is wiser to hide the medication in a piece of food.

Wrapping the oral medicine in a discreet, efficient package is great with less amount of food used. Food is said to interfere with the absorption of the reptile medication, so this method should be considered a last resort. All in all, is vital to a good background and expertise in treating reptiles. The goal of reptile medication has no more stress, but relief.
