The first melodicas were made in the 1950s by the Hohner Company. The melodica is actually a harmonium, which is propelled by breath and is small and light enough to be held by hand. Since the first melodica was, other manufacturers came with their own versions of the melodica. Some of these are the Tokai Pianica, the Suzuki Melo Dion, the Clavietta, Yamaha Pianica, the Silver Tone Organomica, and much more.

Holding and playing melodicas

The melodica is a little confusing to keep or play especially if your first time to come on the instrument. This is because it looks like a cross between a wind instrument and a piano. However, all you have to do is support the instrument with the thumb, while placing your four fingers in the band. Do not forget your mouth tightly around the mouthpiece to make sure that no air escapes.

And breathing techniques are the two main things to focus on playing the melodica. Just breathing softly into the mouthpiece may take a smooth sound. If you want a thicker or heavier sound, you can use the same air that you can use when you whistle. Do not forget heavy blow on the mouth or it will ruin the alignment of the instrument.

Preserve and protect

Care and maintenance for melodicas is not complicated. Make sure you keep the instrument in its case when not in use. The case will protect against dust, dirt, pets, moisture and the curious hands of small children.

The melodica in popular music

The melodica is actually a favorite tool of many famous musicians as Stevie Wonder, Sufjan Stevens, Ben Folds, Belle and Sebastian, Joe Jackson, DJ Product, The Heavenly Oceans and more.
